Digifest is an annual senior portfolio showcase that allows seniors from the University of Houston’s Digital Media Program to showcase their portfolios and to network with potential employers. The goal of this project was to create an identity system that would not only be used for the event, but to also set its tone.
My concept for this project was to explore and ask the question, “Why?”. Why do people participate and attend in these types of events? Beyond the initial purpose of the event, I believe that people participate and visit the event to learn and to share ideas. Technology is always in a constant state of evolution. As such, new methods and techinques of solving problems are also constantly changing. Unfortunately, sometimes that evolution is slow to reach the professional environment. So, to come in and to see new and interesting ways things are done can be very exciting; especially if it can benefit a visiting employer and their company. On the other side of that table, graduating seniors have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the professional world as professionals can share their knowledge and give some real-world advice.
From this idea of convergence and sharing of ideas, I looked towards biology. To represent my idea, I drew inspiration from the neurons in our body. The human brain can process up to 11 million bits per second. This information is carried by neurons who act like messengers, sending electrical impulses and chemical signals to different areas of the brain. The way the body can send information from every part of the human body and converge to one location, the brain, gave me direction and how to design my graphics.
I believe that the final draft of my abstract design is a good representation of my concept without it appearing too biological or too high tech. The lines and their different colors represent the different sources that carry information. This could mean students, visitors, or employers. The white squares represent hubs where the interactions between each source takes place. After information is shared, the sources continue and converge towards a central location, only to continue their path with their newfound knowledge.
