While researching several art movements, I found Furtunato Depero’s art very interesting. Unlike other futurists like Filippo Marienetti, which I found very chaotic, Depero’s style was like looking into a parallel world that was made up of geometric shapes. While Futurism aimed to celebrate industry and technology, Depero took it a step further and wanted to celebrate everything.
The Futurist Movement is known to have spurred many other art movements in the 20th century and still has an impact in modern design today. For for this project I wanted to find a music genre that made a similar impact. There is no question that the Blues has had some direct influence over the many music genres we have today. To put this concept together, I decided to create and album for one of my favorite blues artists, Joe Bonamassa. I decided to use one of Depero’s skyline pieces as my reference. Using Illustrator, I used the pen tool to trace the basic shapes. I then replaced the windows in Depero’s original artwork with simple, geometric elements that represented the Blues genre such as: a piano, a guitar fretboard, a music staff, and a harmonica. I felt that by doing this, I could successfully connect both mediums.
